Pros and Cons of a CMS

As I started evaluating what I liked and disliked about WordPress, it occured to me that most of the “pros” are also the “cons”. For instance I am impatient, but my brain is full of ideas and things I want to implement. WordPress is great because I get instant gratification because it’s so easy to use and get a great looking site. The bad thing is that my brain wants to do more, tweak things, customize things…even though I might not have the technical ability to write the code, it’s frustrating that there isn’t a button that intuitively realizes my intent. So, I let little details that are bothersome remain unfixed…at least the way that I want them. I really need to boss someone around and say “make this look pretty” or “change this, and make it snappy”….WordPress is who I get to boss around. I still want to learn Javascript, because…well people who are good at JS seem to be higher up on the evolutionary chain, and they can create things that are amazing. I know there’s probably a plugin for anything that a JS brain could create…but there are always things that don’t fit what I want or need. I have dabbled in HTML sites…the way some hipsters dabble in facial hair. It hasn’t been pretty. There are always backend things I either don’t know how to do, or forget about. Namely, how to secure a site (other than SSL), anti spam etc…the plugins sure make me re-think any reservations I might have about WordPress. Over all I really like WordPress, my real problem with it is my own patience. I want to get a plugin/theme etc…I want it to do what it says it’s going to do, without trying to sell me 20 other “add ons”. I get irrational when I’m inundated with too many choices, and I don’t really want to learn how to tell the bad guys from the good guys when it comes to marketing. I just want a decent product, I don’t want to have to worry about whether it will do what it’s supposed to…I want to focus on the site!
