There are many things to be aware of when making sure that your voice is healthy. Below are some additional thoughts and reminders for vocal health. You will find that some of these things work for you and some don’t, experiment with different healthy habits that work for you.
Hydration
We’ve talked about it before, but drinking water helps your vocal cords stay hydrated and it’s good for your body. Try to avoid water that’s too hot or too cold. Extreme temperatures will shock your vocal cords and stress them.
Fruit Juices
Juices can be healthy and help your voice. Many singers are not affected by the natural sugar in juices, however some singers find that it creates mucous and makes it difficult to sing. Again, experiment with what works for YOU.
Teas
Herbal teas are great and can be soothing for your throat. Because caffeine dries out the throat and the vocal cords, try to stay away from caffeinated teas.
Honey
Honey is considered a superfood and most singers find it soothing without any side effects. It is great for sweetening herbal teas.
Citrus
Most citrus is high in Vitamin C and has many other wonderful benefits, however it tends to dry out the throat. Lemon in your tea might taste great, but it has a drying effect. However there are singers that swear by honey and lemon in their herbal tea. Experiment and observe the effects that it has on your voice. Talk to your instructor if you have any questions.
