Performing and Technique

As you go through the process of creating your individual stage identity and sound, keep one thing in mind…Technique isn’t everything! (Gasps heard worldwide, from vocal teachers everywhere!!!). Don’t get me wrong, technique is important, but it’s often over-emphasized. If you are striving for a unique sound, then style and expression are your number one priority. Technique is there to make sure that your voice is supported and functioning properly. You practice your exercises with the best technique possible, so that you can create a great sound without hurting your voice and so that you don’t have to think about it when you perform. Your muscles will remember their proper place and you can have fun experimenting with sound. Technique will help you with range, hitting high notes without tension. You CAN balance technique and style, just make sure that you work with your instructor, take care of your voice, and pay attention when there are signs of any distress.
