As your performance skills grow, you will change as a performer. Remember, you can always change the way you phrase something if it isn’t working anymore. Even if the song has silly lyrics that might not have a deep meaning it helps to go through this process. Your audience needs to feel like you’re connected to the material you’re performing.
Don’t be discouraged or distracted if this process isn’t effective overnight. As a culture, we have become accustomed to seeing videos on social media of beginning performers and we are quick to judge. Don’t be that person! We are all in the process of developing our instrument and our stage presence. You have lots of work ahead of you, and you are somewhere in the mix. You will change as you grow.
Only you can decide who you are and how much you want to share with your audience. Sometimes if we break down our intention and why we sing, it will help us. Are you hurting, and you want your audience to cry with you? Are you happy and want your audience to be joyful with you? Are you angry and you want the audience to feel that frustrated, passionate burn? Your feelings might change on a day to day basis, but take your audience with you.
